I have yet to see a single problem with RIS 2.0 software on Windows 2000. I have done VB development with the tower/rcx on the same platform. Changing the motor 'speed' (pulse wave modulation) really only changes the torque. It will only change the speed if the motor is heavily loaded. Another technique that is more successful is to create a control loop in which the motor is on for 5 (...) (23 years ago, 26-Apr-02, to lugnet.robotics)

I don't think collision detection will be possible since the hardware/firmware does a checksum (at least in lego firmware), and no message is provided to the VM software (LASM), this prevents ACK/NAK protocols working. The 'usual' way to get status data is to poll the the RCX memory for status information, but you can't do that because of the number of RCX bricks; so how about getting each RCX to send a response message (or series of messages) to the PC encoding (...) You need to look up pbForth (or is it pBrick?) and NQC. Those are two languages for the rcx that have variables -- specifically math, as I'm not sure if there are strings for the RCX. If you haven't checked out Jin Sato's "Lego Mindstorms The Masters Technique", then I urge you to do so. Chapter 3 (pp. 19-50) are devoted to gears, gear ratios, and ways to make gear blocks. Considering that gear ratio is such a fundamental concept, it's disturbing that several authors of Mindstorms books have got it confused. You can still switch back and forth between legOS and NQC if you find the joystick control helpful. Another suggestion is to write a legOS program that runs all axis at intervals...if you just need it for testing. A final suggestion is to use the (...) I finally have everything working, here's what I did: Installed binutils and gcc with Max Bowsher's script.
