In lugnet.loc.au, Lindsay Frederick Braun writes:
By the way, for the .au folks, have you heard any of these awful "Outback
Steakhouse" commercials they have up here in the eastern US?  The supposed
"essence" of Australia--Paul Hogan, wallabies, and Men at Work, mostly--has
been canned and parleyed into a good-sized STOW-restaurant (STOW=Stuff*
Tacked On Walls) empire up here.

Kinda like the Lone Star franchise out here by the looks of it. Icky at the
best of times. Do they have a stiffed Kangaroo head on the wall? A life sized
Aborigine manikin in the corner with a Crocodile Dundee hat on? Framed,
autographed pictures of Paul Hogan (about time he changed nationality to US
anyway)?

It's depressing, and IIRC it was started by an Australian emigre catering to
US myths about Australia.

I still get asked about Kangaroos in the middle of Sydney and pet Koala's in
the back yard, and they're quite serious when they ask! One myth that's true
though is that Cadbury's chocolate is better than Hershey's (and I can speak
from a tasting experience). <GD&R>

Perhaps it's indicative that there aren't any in Australia, but there's one
in Guam and a bunch on the Pacific Rim--and they have a partnership with
NASCAR, a US stock-car racing syndicate usually associated with country
bumpkins.

(...) I have coyotes and roadrunners in mine. :-) What myth? Hershey's chocolate sucks. Cadbury's not the best, but it's a darn sight better than most of the junk they sell in America. Bruce (25 years ago, 4-May-00, to lugnet.loc.au, lugnet.off-topic.debate)

(...) Ugh, does that sound familiar... I get asked if everyone in Israel speaks Yiddish (heck no!), if I ride a camel to school (!), and "are you SURE it's not all a big desert?!" Not to mention that I have to defend the IDF* :-) ...First of all I (...) (25 years ago, 4-May-00, to lugnet.loc.au, lugnet.off-topic.debate)

(...) Heh. The Lone Star franchise seems to exist everywhere *except* the Lone Star State (Texas, USA). So yes, your having Lone Star restaurants in Sydney is exactly analogous to our having Outback Steakhouses in Houston. Ugh. (...) And every one (...) (...) That's the root of my rant about Americanism--it's actually a hybrid culture that's gravitated towards the US because of economic power and demographic strength. The insidious part of Americanism is actually its functioning--its corporatist (...) (25 years ago, 3-May-00, to lugnet.loc.au, lugnet.off-topic.debate)
