I'm really hoping Larry will have some time to pop in his thoughts because I
know he is familiar with IBM's conferencing and could at least provide
another opinion on post cancellation.

Another thought on post cancellation, in extreme cases like inappropriately
posted IP, the post needs to come down, so cancellation is the order. In an
extreme case, I would expect it to be Lugnet's responsibility to remove the
post ASAP (think of the child pornography issue which was discussed in
debate a while ago).

And my experience with IBM's conferencing is that there was little or no
abuse. People didn't post things in the expectation that enough people would
read them.

I totally agree. Cancellation as a moderating technique, used
consistently, worked extremely well in the IBM environment. It's been 5
years since I was there but I ran some fairly controversial FORUMs and
had to use the heavy hand of cancellation more than once, but never lost
control completely.

However, there are two significant differences between IBM and here.

- We are not constrained by employment agreements as Lugnetters.
Ultimately, if you pushed it hard enough, you could lose your job (or be
dismissed from your contract). Never heard of it happening but it could.
That's not the case here. We are only(1) in danger of being ToSsed.

- IBM has much deeper pockets. Cancellation means editorial control.
I've mentioned this before, but there are liability implications of
exercising editorial control that Todd, I think, wants to avoid. Once
you exercise it, that's it. Even cancelling only the most egregious IP
violations means you're exercising control. IBM could do that editing
thing with impunity, it had the best lawyers money could buy. One
lawsuit and this whole experiment is over.

So, while I feel that cancellation is a good tool, and moderating boards
are effective tools, I do understand that there may be issues that
constrain us from taking on the best solution (3).

You know I love to talk and I'd love to say a lot more but I have to
budget my time. I still have 3,000 pounds of Lego to pack (out of 10). I
have a couple other posts to try to respond to...

1 - "only". Let's face it, Lugnet means more to some of us than others.
It means a lot to me. I'm actually a relative newcomer to the online
LEGO community(2), but I feel I have had a great deal of influence on
how Lugnet has grown, I was HERE from the very beginning. Before the
beginning, even, in that there was a testing period that you can't even
see any more because it was all erased.  (4) I would take it pretty hard
if I were asked to leave. That may not be the same for everyone but I
suspect there are a lot of us that like it here a lot, overall, despite
bumps.

2 - late 1997. Contrast with Todd who's been active in ATL and RTL since
I dunno when but at least 1995 maybe a lot earlier

3 - best when viewed by the metric of what's best for the community
without consideration for external issues like lawsuits and economic
viability.

4 - not that anything very earth shattering happened, but you see what I
mean. Are a baby's first words memorable? Not always. But they're
significant.
