I think we have a legitimate sub-hobby of model railroading, plus I
think it is a great way to make model railroading more accessible (and
not just to kids, many people find their ability to work with fine
detail is greatly diminished as they get older).

The organizer for SuperTrain 2001 wanted us to participate specifically
because our display was far and away the most popular with the kids.
If kids don't get interested in model trains, (so that new members
join) the hobby will die out as its participants do.

It doesn't seem to me like the hobby is in any danger of dying out. Looking
at Kevin's magazines, the layouts at the show, and the crowds that came to
see them, I'd say its as healthy as ever. Moreso than the real things!

A typical model railroading club likely wouldn't encourage new members
younger than about early teens. The models are too small, too expensive,
and just don't have the "playability" that younger kids normally want.
Early teens is the upper end of the group normally attracted to Lego
(ignoring all us AFOLs, etc.). So, I don't see us as necessarily helping
the normal train clubs get new members. Getting kids interested in trains
in general is the big thing, whether they be Lego trains, trains in
computer programs, real trains, trains in books, etc.

Don't design inefficiency in - it'll happen in the implementation.
