A funny thing happened while I was reading this thread. I got a call from
the local chapter of the NMRA, the SER-Piedmont Division. They called and
asked if I would do a workshop/presentation on LEGO trains at their December
meeting. I thought that it was kind of cool that they asked. I told them to
call it "Introduction to model railroading with LEGO trains", now I just
have to put together a hour worth of presentation. At least the hands on
demo part will be easy, just dump a load of bricks on the tables and let
them build.

Cool! If you have any 4.5V or 12V stuff, you might want to bring it and do
10-15 minutes on the history of LEGO trains. I'd also bring any recent stock
trains that you have, and some MOCs. Print out a variety of Track Designer
plans to show how the track geometry works. I'd also bring a variety of other
9V equipment and spend some time showing and discussing how all the 9V
equipment is compatible. I think the most important thing to stress is that the
whole LEGO line has potential for being used in building train layouts. I think
this is one thing which will make LEGO trains interesting to many people (gee,
I can buy my kid who already has a bunch of LEGO a train set and some extra
track and perhaps some extra wheels etc. and then she can just have at it). Of
course this little secret is what also allows us more serious modelers to make
such awsome creations, because many of the parts we use in our best creations
come from outside the Train or even Town themes.
