Regarding the Emperor's guards, there was a scene in Jedi that was cut in which
some Imperial official demanded to see the Emperor, and the guards turned him
away by using their sticks on him (by way of a shock, I believe). I've actually
seen a still shot of the outtake on some web site. If I can locate the image,
I'll post it here. I agree that the Stormtroopers were never quite as menacing
as they were made out to be in the SW literature. In ANH I'll grant you that
they always seemed to be a lovable troop of buffoons; cannon fodder, basically.
The Stormtrooper ranks seemed to be where they put the green-horns fresh out of
the academy. But I still have trouble with armored Stormtroopers being defeated
by waist-high teddy bears chucking rocks. If the battle had taken place on
Kashykk (forgive the spelling error) as originally planned, and had Wookies
pulling off Stormtrooper arms, and cleaving helms...that would have been
credible.
