Weren't those Stormtroopers in the Speeder Bike kit?

No No No... Those were Scout Troopers.  Big difference.  Storm Troopers are
mean and dangerous where the Scout Troopers come off as kind of the wimps of
the Imperial Army.

True, but by Jedi any kind of Stormtrooper unit was made wimpy by Lucas.
Stormtroopers were meant to be the elite shock troops of the Empire.  They were
absolutely loyal to the Emperor, and even kept order even within the ranks of
the Imperial troops.

Of course, by Jedi, we had the Emperor's guard.  Not that we ever saw
those red-cloaked guys *do* anything (besides stand there and look
cool...) but still...I think that must have been where all of the
competent Stormtroopers went.

Anyway, the Stormtroopers were no great shakes in the first SW movie
either.

"Check the door. If it's locked, move on to the next one."  Ooh yeah, real
great search technique there.

"Hey, can you come up here and give us a hand?" *KLONK*

Which one had the Stormtrooper bouncing his head off of the girder? I
forget.

(I'll forgive them their inaccuracy while shooting at Luke & Leia - a lot
of people complain about this, but they seem to forget that the Empire was
deliberately letting them escape...)

In ESB, they seemed pretty competent during the assault on the Hoth base,
I'll give them that.  (Except, as I understand it, in the Special
Edition.  But I don't believe in the SE.  It doesn't exist.)

Regarding the Emperor's guards, there was a scene in Jedi that was cut in which
some Imperial official demanded to see the Emperor, and the guards turned him
away by using their sticks on him (by way of a shock, I believe).  I've actually
seen a still shot of the outtake on some web site.  If I can locate the image,
I'll post it here.  I agree that the Stormtroopers were never quite as menacing
as they were made out to be in the SW literature.  In ANH I'll grant you that
they always seemed to be a lovable troop of buffoons; cannon fodder, basically.
The Stormtrooper ranks seemed to be where they put the green-horns fresh out of
the academy.  But I still have trouble with armored Stormtroopers being defeated
by waist-high teddy bears chucking rocks.  If the battle had taken place on
Kashykk (forgive the spelling error) as originally planned, and had Wookies
pulling off Stormtrooper arms, and cleaving helms...that would have been
credible.
