Railroad unions were some of the very first unions to form. It has a lot of
historical significance. Since "the brotherhood of man" includes not one,
but TWO male specific words, yet everyone knows it refers to the entire race
of humans, I see no reason not to go with such a neato historical term in
the name of PC-ness.

That thought train sounds like rationalization to me.  But it's not my
brotherhood so forget my two cents.
