Can this include clubs which don't call themselves LTC's but exhibit layouts

Kevin

That is a question that I've been wrestling with.  Someone farther up the
thread put forth the idea that the IOLTC would be used for contacts and
negotiations with LEGO and LEGO Direct.

What sort of negotiations?  What would any potential IOLTC member group
expect to get from LEGO?  Free stuff?  Discounted stuff?  Advice or
assistance?

All good questions.  I guess my answer would be that I "expect" nothing.  If
something is worked out so that we got some sort of discount then all the
better but I expect nothing.

All of these things have value.  So my question becomes "what are you doing
for LEGO, if you expect LEGO to do something for you?"

Every time a group displays a layout at a show, they are providing wonderful
exposure and promotion for LEGO trains.  Should that merit some special
considerations from LEGO?  Maybe, maybe not - you could argue either side.
If a group of train fanatics get together and call themselves an "LTC",
should they merit the same considerations?

I think you answer yourself later on this but here are my thoughts.

1.  Just calling yourself a LUG or LTC and registering www.XXltc.org shouldn't
mean a thing in terms of any "special considerations".  I think that a group
should first show that they can do a show.

2.  I don't think you have to do a "Train" Show to be considered.  NELUG's
first "show" had almost nothing to do with Trains, it was mostly Star Wars.  I
think that should count, it was a public display that got rave reviews, just
because we didn't have trains should exlude us (although we do trains now :).

3.  Again it is up to LEGO to decide if we "deserve" anything.  I will continue
doing this either way, with or without the help or recognition of TLC.

Please take my comments with the necessary grain of salt.  I'm a member of
the GMLTC.  We've done many shows, and we've talked to thousands of people
about LEGO trains.  And yes, we've gotten some stuff from LEGO - like a
mostly expenses paid trip to Carlsbad last Summer!  But in my mind, I think
we've earned some of that through our thousands and thousands of hours of
work on our layouts, and for our time and expenses when we do shows.

Well we have done a couple LEGO shows and are prepairing for our second train
show so we don't have the experiance you do.  We also have not received a thing
from TLC as of yet and we have still been able to build a rather substantial
(in our terms not GMLTC terms) group LEGO collection.  We have done this by
making money other ways (see our web site).

So we have become somewhat self sufficiant.  Does that mean we shouldn't be
treated the same as other groups that get stuff from TLC?  I don't think so.
If other groups are getting things from TLC I personally want to know about it
so we can ask for the same level of treatment based on our relative public
exposure to other groups (now that is something hard to measure).

Would I like to see LEGO encourage more LTCs to form?  Absolutely!  The more
groups that are out there, the better the environment will be for all of us.
Would I like to see LEGO support new groups as they prepare for their first
show?  Absolutely!  Would I like to see LEGO support a group of trainiacs
who have no plans to show?  I can't say that I would...

I agree with everything you say here.

Yea, I'll probably be flamed for this, and I accept that.  I just wanted to
bring up the question of what IOLTC member groups would expect from LEGO...

Why should you get flamed?  I thought is was a great, thought provoking thread.

I also think that this is one of the good reasons for a "Private Mailing List".
We know TLC is watching here and we will probably want to discuss some things
without TLC having the oppertunity to see what we are talking about.
