That section of his post does reveal a lot about his (il)logic processes,
though.

Where I come from, it is a sign of critical thinking to be able to evaluate
an idea on its own merits, regardless of the source. But I know that
critical thinking is a dying art.
|
Where I come from, critical thinking requires actual thinking, not dogmatic
obedience. Sadly, dogmatic obedience is not dying in this country. Citing
mythos as fact and expecting to be taken seriously is not critical thinking.

Do cultural differences add nuance to the written/spoken word that cause
different people to react differently to the same phrase? Might this somehow
explain why some people have a problem with the type of language used by
others. Does this mandate that in polite society there are words and
phrases that should be avoided?
|
To the former: yes, of course. That is part of language change. As to those
differences *mandating* that there are words and phrases that should be avoided
in so-called polite society, no. What determines whether or not there are
words that should and should not be used is a culture (which can be small or
large) and what they find beautiful/ugly or tasteful/distasteful.
|
Every generation creates new terminology/slang in order to differentiate
themselves from their parents. Why should it be any different between
cultures?
|
Actually, the primary reason isnt to differentiate themselves from their
parents, but rather the language of their parents has been weakened of emphasis
by frequent use. This is one of the driving forces of language change. The
same is true on a cultural level.
|
So I guess I would have to agree with you, Jeff. That section reveals a lot
about my logic processes. Its called keeping an open mind.
|
Youve shown in this thread that your mind is not, in fact, very open.
