For example, let’s say Site A starts threads mentioning that the murfling on Site Z is out of control and that the mods are too heavy handed. Then Site Z responds by saying that Site A is just a bunch of ‘loser poopy-pants who can’t make any cool Lego creations.’ Site A counters with some name calling and threats of ‘as yet to be determined actions to be taken in the future against Site Z.’ The members of Site Z vigorously defend their beloved site and call for all members of Site A to be banned from joining Site Z forever. Site A then points out that it was created before Site Z and that they know more about Lego than anyone else plus who would want to join Site Z anyways since only posers go there. Site Z hears about what Site A just said and then within minutes they...

Whew - I need a drink of water.

Is this a large problem in your eyes? If so, are there any steps that could be taken by anyone that you believe could help the situation?

All thoughts greatly appreciated!

I was recently involved in something similar, when I took exception to the characterization of one site (Site A) by members of another, much larger site (Site B). Frankly, the postings struck me as petty and really kind of snide, and I posted several comments to that effect.

On the bright side, several members of Site B adopted a sort of “yeah, they can sometimes go a bit far,” so I was gratified to see that not all members of Site B were as rude as the offending posts.

On the dark side, a number of people on Site B still stepped forward to say “yeah, they’re right, so to heck with your lame Site A.”

Overall, I guess that if the attitudes expressed are coming from members of the site who happen to be of like mind, there’s no point in having Site A itself attack Site B, since the sites themselves aren’t in conflict. And calls for banning or censure on these grounds seems a little over the top IMO, unless a poster has violated the TOS in the process of voicing his/her strongly held opinion.

Equally, a member of Site A should be allowed to defend that site on Site B, within the TOS as well.

Just my $0.02.

Dave!
