To Kelly’s point, making the observation about the site *members* always will give you your exceptions. I’m not sure why Kelly chose to specifically mention Lugnet, but you could just as well have said BZPower, FBTB, JLUG, Classic-Castle, Classic-Space, or whatever. The only one I can think of where it might not ever get out of hand might be Lego.com’s forums where everything is pre-moderated rather than post-moderated.

I think the difference in the instance that sparked this discussion is that the administration went flippo. They said they would ban prospective members a priori, simply because they belonged to another forum.

Otherwise, those types of bitter arguments happen now and again on *every* site. Sometimes, the administration feels the responsibility of quashing freedom of expression for the emotional state of the forums (or its members) or for the image of the site. And sometimes administration intentionally sets up forums where such arguments are inherently against the TOS, and therefore can be quashed according to the site’s rules. You can make good arguments in all those directions, and many sites have their own unique spin on those ideas.

Where it becomes problematic is when administration quashes such discussions because of personal involvement. Personally, I think that’s where this other forum crossed the line. Not that it’s not the owner’s right to do such a thing (because it is), but I can’t imagine what I would consider to be a good argument that would favor the decision.

That said, kids have a very different dynamic than adults. Adults have a tendancy to be nicer to each other *usually*, but have a tendancy to fight more *bitterly* when they stray. Plus, adults are better at holding grudges that kids often let go of with time.

(...) True, that. All sites have their troublemakers, or those who don't play well together. I mentioned Lugnet because unlike all other sites mentioned, there is no active moderation here - the only recourse is murfling, which happens rarely and (...)
