For example, let’s say Site A starts threads mentioning that the murfling on Site Z is out of control and that the mods are too heavy handed. Then Site Z responds by saying that Site A is just a bunch of ‘loser poopy-pants who can’t make any cool Lego creations.’ Site A counters with some name calling and threats of ‘as yet to be determined actions to be taken in the future against Site Z.’ The members of Site Z vigorously defend their beloved site and call for all members of Site A to be banned from joining Site Z forever. Site A then points out that it was created before Site Z and that they know more about Lego than anyone else plus who would want to join Site Z anyways since only posers go there. Site Z hears about what Site A just said and then within minutes they...

Whew - I need a drink of water.

Is this a large problem in your eyes? If so, are there any steps that could be taken by anyone that you believe could help the situation?

All thoughts greatly appreciated!

I guess when one’s hobby is a toy, there will be children involved! :)

Personally, I think it’s bad for the overall AFOL community. I’ll grant you, (A) I’m still sort of new to the community (even with 37 years of LEGO under my belt), and (B) as such, I have little right to make such a comment...

But (C), IF we want to see the hobby expand, and (D), IF the concept of “play well” and “play on” are still in play, then I think it’s hard to play at all when there’s petty bickering where the world can see it.

In addition to belonging to LUGnet, I also belong to 4 or 5 other LEGO related websites. I’d like to think we could all just get along like a city full of happy minifigs. I’m a realist; I know that’s not always possible.

My take on this is, therefore, if someone on site A has a beef with someone else on site B, take it offline! Play nice! Continuously nasty posts give the impression that we are all a bunch of whiny adult brats who never grew up. I don’t think that’s what the hobby needs at this stage of the game.

However, we also don’t have to be all Pollyannish and make everyone think we all get long just peachy-keen; we are all human, last time I looked, and as such there will be disagreements between us and that’s natural and healthy. It’s when site A starts a flame war with site B that we should all have issues.

After all...it should all be about the bricks.

Play Well and Prosper,

Matthew
