This has nothing to do with allowing anything. Im not advocating banning
or allowing anything.

Well, not necessarily you per se, but its one of those things that the Right
is generally against.
Gay marriage being the big ticket item at the moment.
|
Its all how you look at it. The Right is against the Left redefining marriage.
|
Things like that, restrictions on stem cell research,
|
Mainly the Right is against government funding for such research. Same with
abortion. But yes, there is a moral component to it as well.
|
and even things like
gambling & prostitution.
|
Prostitution, yes, but that is, for the most part, a bipartisan issue. And so
is gambling-- even our rising star Republican governor Tim Pawlenty is trying to
push a state run casino. I oppose this stupid idea.
|
Certainly Id expect that the Right would be more
against such things (and advocate laws against them) whereas the Left
*generally* would be more liberal when it came to that.
|
These shifts are emanating from the Left (certainly not from the
conservative Right) and in the arena of ideas,
|
Well, I wouldnt be so quick to make that call-- I dont think its really
deriving from the political arena, but more the societal changes going on.
The internet, TV, movies, etc all have a lot to do with that, I think.
|
Oh, absolutely I agree. Mostly I am speaking about the social lefties who are
definitely in control of a lot of the media. Hollywood practically equals
Left.
|
Freedom and availability of information has allowed previously hidden,
obscured, or publically frowned-on information to be more exposed. Its given
a voice to far more people, and widened the definition of whats accepted
because you see it more often.
Suddenly peoples closetted lives are being exposed, and its seen as
commonplace. How often does the topic of porn come up in casual
conversation nowadays versus 30 years ago?
|
Yes. And why is this a good thing? Its as if anything private is now a
bad thing.
|
How much do kids see now versus
then?
|
Exactly. And how does a kid continue to be a kid after having been exposed to
such mature subjects? Pandoras box, and there goes childhood.
|
When did someone being gay become something that you can mention freely
in conversation? How come you can say certain words on TV now that would
NEVER have made it even CLOSE to censors in the 50s? Take it back 100 years,
and were onto topics like racial and sexual descrimination.
I dont really see the Left to blame for such ideas. The difference as far as
I see is that the Left is merely more accepting to them.
|
Yes, because the Left sees such changes as progress, and the Right sees them as
decadent.
|
The Right tends to
be more static in terms of its standpoints (which is part of its strength,
but also part of its weakness). Its all about traditional American,
Christian, fiercely patriotic values, which frowns on much of modern culture.
|
Well, I think that there is a LOT to frown about WRT to our culture!
|
The Left by comparison doesnt reject the new culture as much. But I
certainly dont think its the Left thats *causing* those changes.
|
By embracing, promoting, and teaching these values, by pasting those who oppose
them as bigotted and intolerant, the Left is definitely enabling these
cultural changes to occur, even as Lefties initiate NEW changes which push norms
further.

Redefining "who's allowed to vote" or "which race can use this bathroom" I'll hope you'll (...) (19 years ago, 13-Jun-05, to lugnet.off-topic.debate, FTX)

My impression is that an all-out ban on stem-cell research would receive massive support from the Right, but the Right realizes that it's a game of inches. First, ban government funding (...)
