I must confess that this has always puzzled me.  Why are "states"
preferable to a single state?  I can certainly understand how in earlier
times the limits of communications and geography necessitated the
subdivision of the nation, but this no longer seems relevant to me, and it
will only become less meaningful as electronic communication and the web
become more advanced.  For that matter, why would a global state be a
problem?  No one here has really discussed it at length (AFAIK), but in the
media, the only arguments I hear are horribly xenophobic.  Is there a
benefit to preventing a one-world community?
