Sounds like the time for this has come.  Shall we create a .market.custom
newsgroup for this?  (I realize of course that when you say 'group' above
you mean a different kind of group than a newsgroup, but you're still going
to need a place to go gonzo in-depth, and .theory isn't the best place for
that past a certain point.)

What will lego think of something like this? So far they have ignored
Suz's custom minifigs and Dan's kits and the various custom items sold
on eBay, but if we make enough noise they will undoubtedly notice us :).

I think it's a different market, even though the buyers are generally the
same set of people.  LEGO sells new elements, and in contrast these are
technically used elements (the sets have been opened and the parts have all
been touched during the sorting phase).  Also, as long as you're not
manufacturing bricks, you're not violating any LEGO patents.  IANAL, but I
believe if you avoid infringing on LEGO copyrights, trademarks, trade dress,
patents, or any other possibly obsure IP issues, then you are perfectly in
the clear to resell the components of the sets you buy, either separately or
reconfigured into custom unofficial sets.

BTW, we should be very careful next Summer and very clear in our discussions
with LEGO Direct that we desire any bulk purchase arrangements to be free
and clear of any strings attached which might prevent someone from reselling
the parts they purchase.  Personally, I would boycott any bulk purchasing
arrangement in which the purchase agreement disallowed resale.

Personally, I would boycott any bulk purchasing (...) Todd, (and everyone else too!) I would think that they -might- put a stipulation on that you cannot resell directly (Ie auction on E-bay for 3x the money). I would agree with a limit like that. (...) (...) Todd, My take is that TLC should be concerned not about *will* someone take some of these bulk-purchased parts and make custom created kits for sale, but *what* venue would they be sold in. If someone (like Larry) make 50-100 hoppers and sells (...) (25 years ago, 12-Dec-99, to lugnet.market.theory)

(...) I am against creating a group at this point for two reasons: - premature - inter consortium discussions may well want to be private... the nuances of what sets to order, how to organise, etc may be proprietary. Consider, if you will, that (...) (25 years ago, 13-Dec-99, to lugnet.market.theory)

(...) I can imagine <g>. I ws thinking more about the selling end because it can be done virtually. Sharing parts buying introduces the extra cost of mailing parts around - which may or may not be worthwhile. However, I certainly wouldn't assume (...)
