That's incredible. I pay $1120 per month for my 900 sq. ft. one-bedroom
home.

Maybe I should move to Australia... I'd have more money for Lego.   ;^)

You'd certainly need the extra money for the Lego! :)
Seriously, I wonder though how things such as salary compare (not
asking personally), what standard that home, location etc etc (I
presume that is $1120 US) BTW what's 900sq ft in metric?

That's about 84 square meters.

I don't know where Mark lives, but with rents like that, he probably lives in
some place with decent jobs.  For comparison, I was renting out a 2 bedroom 2
bath condo of the same size as Mark's house, for $1275 US in the Silicon Valley.
That's on the cheap side for here, other people I know are paying $1500 to $1600
per month for comparable lodgings.  Of course, the median family income in this
area is about $70000 US per year...

So, what's our metric?  Well, the current retail price for new Lego sets works
out to about $0.12 US per part.  If an average Silicon Valley family were to
spend its entire annual budget on Lego at retail price :^) :^) :^) , they could
buy approximately 583,000 parts.

I'm about to move to Baltimore, Maryland, on the other side of the country.  I
could rent lodgings to the above-mentioned condo for about $900 US per month --
about 70% of the Silicon Valley rent.  *Median* wages there are lower, however *
professional* salaries do not vary much around the country.  Thus, in order to
maximize Lego consumption, one should a) have a professional career, and b) live
somewhere where the housing costs are cheap.  :^)

For a family on a single average wage $175 AUS per week is a lot of
money (in Australia).

This sentence is not clear.  Are you saying that the median family income down
your way is $9100 AUS ($175 per week X 52 weeks)?  Or that $175 AUS per week is
just a lot to spend?

Deidre (just interested, not trying to start a standard of living flame
war!)
