Another advantage of having a separate, detached fetcher/spooler for incoming
new messages is that it can be turned around backwards and instead of polling
the server periodically, it can be made callable by the server, if clients
registered themselves at startup and listened to some port for notifications.
(Not a workable solution if you're behind a corporate firewall, though.)
