I'm not so sure they are gray... look at the caption picture that shows the action shot of the minifig kicking a ball. Those look white :-( Maybe Kevin can clarify for us, but I'm not optimistic. I tried a 300dpi of page 8 and you still can't really make out the action box. My best guess is that it is an escape pod coming out the back. My scanner isn't the sharpest as you can see. KL (...) (26 years ago, 9-Nov-99, to lugnet.starwars)
