Scott, please let me introduce you to a secret that I'm fairly sure most lego
users are hip to...   The "yellow" minifigs are representations of human
beings who are lighter in skin color, i.e.  white people.  EVERY LEGO SET EVER
MADE IS A PROVERBIAL WHITE PACK.  But TLG can no longer continue to avoid the
issue of race within their playsets.  "Why?" You may ask, so let me explain.
Now that TLG has started to incorporate ethnic themes into their toys (i.e.
Japanese in the Ninja sets, and Native Americans in the Wild West sets), as
well as having presented at least 3 "alien" minifigs (I'm counting the gungan
head as one, chewie as the 2nd, and darth maul as the last)  TLG now has a
responsibility to it's fans of color to provide toys that represent a darker
skinned phenotype.  This responsibility becomes so much more so when you
consider that TLG has decided to make toys of a story that is explicit about
having black heroes.  Do you even think that the people at Kenner thought
twice about making a Lando action figure? it's the 21st century for god's
sake, and lego toys need to join the rest of us in it, they don't need to
cling to some outdated eurocentric ideal.  I may be guilty of having a warped
sense of humor, but I think that my intentions are clear - A decision by TLG
to represent darker human beings in the minifigs would be something that we
all benefit from.
Would you be happy with dark yellow?
The fact that lego is making the ethnic sets, indian or oriental, should tell
you that yellow is just the basic color for minifigures.  You do not see red
used for indians although yellow is used for orientals.  Everything is just
yellow.  As for Darth Maul and Jar Jar I do not feel that they recieved
preasure from the Sith or Gungans to create these minifigures.
I can pretty much tell you that there probably is not a bunch of lego big
wigs that are sitting around the office in thier KKK shrouds.  Lets just have
fun with our toys.
