However, was every other parent who remained in East Germany a likewise
unfit parent? This again seems too sweeping a claim, generalizing everyone
under one circumstantial banner.
That said, the fact of your uncles brainwashing is dreadful. I have a
friend whose grandfather was "drafted" by the Gestapo and never heard from
again. How was it determined that your uncle had been brainwashed, if I may
ask?

Okay, okay. No one here denies that Cuba has a lot to answer for, civil-
rights-wise. Some people feel that that's the paramount issue here, while
others feel that the question is one of rightful parental custody. I number
myself the latter, and to my moral code it is clear. Its the simple fact that
Sr. Gonzales has rightful custody of his son and should be able to live
wherever he pleases, barring direct and demonstrable jeopardy to Elian.
I'd still be interested to hear from you on some of my other points in
http://www.lugnet.com/off-topic/debate/?n=5335 which have gotten lost between
this post and that.

The niceties of when was the formal petition filed and so forth are just legal machinations being used to deny civil rights. His mother gave her (...)
