Well, here's a little story about a kid named Dave. First, let me just say
that this kid has a pretty awesome name, but that's not the story...
Our little hero was born around 1967ish, and grew up in a little place
called 'The Golden Horseshoe'. This horseshoe, for those 'not in the know',
is located at the western end of Lac Ontario (working on my french ;) ).
Now friends, this Dave guy, when he was oh so much younger than he is today,
experienced wonderful winters, where there would be snow! Yes, actual snow!
And this snow would be blanketing the ground from around mid-November to
early March with nary a sign of ground under the snow.
Lately, however, timeframe = last 10-15ish years, Daves winters have been
somewhat disappointing, and getting progressively more disappointing. Sure
there will be the occasional huge snowstorm, but after a few days/weeks, the
snow would melt 'cause there would be a 'thaw', and the cycle repeats itself
over and over, and there would be no consistant *winter*, just sporadic
snowfalls that do not stick around long enuf to build a good snowman!
Yes our winters are still colder than, say, LA or Mexico--that's what we get
for living up here in the north. Bot don't go telling me that we're not
experiencing some sort of shift in the environment for I have 35 years of
living in the same location and experiencing the depreciation of winter
personally.
And you could go on about how it's a natural cycle--that the earth itself
tends towards ice ages and warm ages for evidence supports this claim, and I
would even go so far as to support the cyclical nature of our planet. That
said, you cannot sit there and tell me that our impact, a la industry,
vehicles, and whatever else has negligible impact on the environment. We
just have to look off the coast of Spain to see the immediate ramifications
of humankinds impact.
Don't you think that there are, and will be, long term consequences of
humanity's 'raping of the environemnt' as well?
Is like I could eat all the pizza I wanted to when I was 20 with no
discernable negative impact on my body. Now that I'm 35, well, not so much.
I can say this 'cause my friend, at the old age of 37, just suffered a heart
attack Sunday morning at 5 a.m. We have to start realizing that the
consequences of our actions today will impact on ourselves. Maybe these
consequences won't be immediately evident, unlike Spain, but they could, and
will, become evident in the future.
'Oh, I cut down this tree here and I can still breathe! Let's go cut that
one down over there. Still here? Still breeathing? Guess trees have
nothing to do with that--all those scientists are full of malarky--let's cut
down all the trees! Let's turn all the land into asphalt! Let's dump all
our waste into the oceans! Let's fill the air with CO and other
gasses--What could be the possible harm? Nothing is immediately evident so
there is none!'
So, like you who is trying to show us the negative impact on us sometime in
the future if we don't rid ourselves of SH today, I'm just saying that my
ideas that I use for living my life don't necessarily bring me 'instant
gratification', and that sometimes my morals and beliefs are in it 'for the
long run', not just for short term gain, and that these 'life lessons' are
gleaned from years of experience, not just made 'ad hoc' 'cause it was a
good idea at the time.

| (...) Darn right, because we happen to believe in freedom. (...) Ah, the "truth" about global warming? Let me ask you Dave, how much global warming are you experiencing up there? None for me here, either! (...) Just answer my question, Dave. Would (...) (22 years ago, 26-Nov-02, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
