I've lived in South carolina for three years now, after spending 20 in the
north. I never hear the racist crap that permeates the northern culture. I
used to hear people use the n word all the time and I've never once heard it
here. Maybe the people in the south are more polite, or maybe its because i'm
in a university town, but I just don't see the open racism.
In fact, (and this horrified me) my sister goes to a small catholic college in
Pennsylvania and is dating a black guy. She constantly gets stared at in
restaraunts and the like. One day the Klan left thousands of flyers all over
the school and town saying how it was immoral that the college had black
basketball players and how any white girl who dated them was a whore. I hate to
be explicit but this was the meanest, dirtiest propaganda I have ever heard.
She called me up in tears, she was so upset. I just couldn't believe that this
happened. Even her boyfriend had never seen anything like that before. When I
think uneducated, I don't think southerners, I think of this kind of trash.
