Pretty ironic scene for a presumably violent movie (I've not seen it).
I have to say that from my perspective, I don't have a strong objection to toy
guns. As several people have mentioned, even when you take all the toy guns
away, the kids still make weapons. Obviously it is impossible (at least in the
US) to totally remove all the possible ways that children can be exposed to
guns.
Of course I am also very strongly in favor of individual gun ownership. I
also feel that it is important that children be taught about guns. I think it
is especially important to examine our history and ask where we would be if we
choose to be passive and not use guns.
Are there any truly passive cultures out there that haven't been steamrollered
away? Switzerland certainly doesn't count (and I think there is a difference
bewteen arming yourself and never using the arms, and choosing not to equip
oneself with the capability of responding to force with force).
It's interesting that this topic started with the discussion of TLC's
depiction of women in mini-figs. One interesting poll item: how many of you
feel it is ok to expose children to one, but not both of, weapons and the
female form? In some ways, I'd expect the majority of folks to side the same
way on both issues (and yes, I am in favor of depicting the female form on
mini-figs, though perhaps the Islander female is a bit distastefull).
I think it's important to teach children about reality. I think this may be a
far more effective way to combat the issues of violence and sexuality in our
media than trying to sweep the whole deal under the rug.
