I like seeing the recent news on the front page, but I would prefer to see
20 messages in compact form.  Actually I usually jump straight to the
traffic report page so this isn't a really big deal for me.  I like the
idea of an advanced interface that goes straight to the compact form from
the traffic page.  This would be great!

OK, check out the traffic page now.  http://www.lugnet.com/news/traffic/

4 messages is NEVER enough to catch up after a few hours of work.  20 is
better.  Because of this I will never use anything but the compact form.

The 4-message intro pages aren't really intended to be used as a newsreader.
They're there as an invitation to see what a group/area is about.  Think of
them as "samples" of what lies ahead in a group.  Without the partial article
bodies, the site looks rather dead; subject lines alone don't give much of an
impression of activity or spirit.

Luckily, if you want to visit the groups often with a news-reading frame of
mind, you can do that straight from the traffic page, or make yourself a
set of bookmarks such as these:

   http://www.lugnet.com/build/?n=,-20&v=c
   http://www.lugnet.com/general/?n=,-40&v=c
   http://www.lugnet.com/market/auction/?n=,-100&v=c
   http://www.lugnet.com/loc/?n=*,-20&v=c

A star (*) character in the n= part means to coalesce all the groups down
the newsgroup tree, rather than just a single group.  It's like having a
virtual group made up out of dozens or hundreds of other groups.

Displaying another format first just means an extra mouse click on one
of those tiny little blue squares.  (Ouch, I'm gonna wear out another mouse
finger at this rate.)
[...]
Please give a larger target than those itty bitty blue squares for reading
the message.  Someone mentioned using the title of the message.  I like
that.  How about the teeny weeny little square AND the title?
[...]
The difference between a tiny dark blue square and a tiny light blue square
is too small to tell without squinting.  This could be solved by coloring
the title the same as the little square (and making it clickable too), but
using a more dissimilar color (like violet) would help even more.  Perhaps
someone colorblind would have more to say on this issue.

Let me see what I can do.

For reference, I use netscape on a 19 inch monitor at 1600x1200 with 15 bit
color most of the time.  I have to use my left (wrong) hand for the mouse
because the right hand has carpal mouse syndrome.  This makes it even
harder for me to target those very very tiny little blue squares.

Interesting.  Wow!  Good stuff to know, thanks.

I'm not old yet, but my hands and eyes are prematurely aged from computer
use.

How about from LEGO use?  ;-)

Thanks, Former lurker,
Don Heyse.

No, thank you.

(...) I like it! I like it a lot better! Now if you could attach the message titles to the little blue squares and make a bigger mousing target I'd be completely happy. Well actually, while you're at it there is one more small thing, and someone (...) (25 years ago, 23-Jun-99, to lugnet.general)
