You are correct. However, others are also correct that sarcasm usually
falls flat when expressed in written form. The problem is that without
visual and audial clues from talking to a person in person there is no
way to tell if the words are heartfelt or sarcasm. The result is that
the norm is to assume that the written word should be taken as written.
The easist way to avoid misunderstanding is to realize that these
misunderstandings happen and avoid starting them. One of the most
important pieces of advice is to not write posts when angry. Of course
some times we just need to vent (I've certainly tripped a few times
myself). Another important thing is that when the misinterpretations
start to fly is to not continue the flamefest, but to admit that your
posting was made while you were angry, and you probably used words that
you didn't truly mean. If this is done, reasonable people will take you
at your word and let it slide. If you counter-attack people you risk
losing respect. Of course a few people make a habit of tossing grenades
followed by "I didn't really mean that." Eventually they lose respect
(the old crying wolf syndrome).
