Yeh, I'm pretty much convinced that what's going on here is the same sort of
thing that occurred with the Weasley Crusher character on ST:TNG. Some
people thought it was okay, but a LOT of people just HATED the idea. And it
DID get really annoying, this stupid pimply kid outthinking half the adults
on the ship...if it had been a general population thing, okay, a bright kid
could outthink them. But these people were Starfleet Academy grads...they
weren't supposed to be the run-of -the-mill folks.
I guess Timmy ("Tim," actually) played into some of this. Why would a
scientist have this kid operating a time machine? (I know, I know, it's a
KID'S toy, okay, but we're talking about the adult reaction to it). I even
sponsored a "Kill Timmy" contest, in which rtl members were challenged with
the most creative way to off the boy.
The winner went like this:
"All we have to do is say "Timmy, you're my FAVORITE minifig!"
Since Timmy knows EVERYBODY really hates him, his eyes will grow wide.
If his eyes get any wider, the stud on top of his head will pop off.
He won't be able to wear a hat.
He won't be able to hide that he has a nose, and his eyes have whites.
The islanders will burn him as a with.
And just think, all we had to do was say we LIKED him. 8)"
(Sorry, I don't recally who wrote the winning entry. This was also the least
violent.)
