In lugnet.general, Robert M. Dye writes:

Why would a
scientist have this kid operating a time machine?

Several possible reasons:

  a. He's a fan of Mr. Peabody (who seemed to get pretty good results out
of Sherman.  Of course,  he did have a good excuse:  bein' a dog 'n
all,  his lack of opposable thumbs made it hard to twiddle knobs).
  b. Intensive focus group studies determined that having a child character
would improve the appeal (and,  hence,  sales) of the Hypno Cruiser.
  c. TLG was getting back at Spielberg for selling the lucrative
"Back to the Future" license to Hasbro.
  4. The good Professor is several fries short of a Happy Meal.

Besides,  what adult would climb into a vehicle that looks like the result of
a collision between a 19th-century attempt at a helicopter and a bad hot rod,
driven by a guy who appears to be on about the 6th day of a speed trip?
