Hi...

I just talked to Steve (and others) about this topic. He realises that there are
a lot of open questions and valid concerns, and would like to apologise for not
having been able to answer them all at the same time that the announcement was
made. Things here at BF have been incredibly exciting, and incredibly hectic.

Steps are being taken to make the announcement slide set available, but more
importantly, you should expect Steve himself to provide a lot more information
soon, within the next day or two. I'd ask people to consider that before they
post further on this topic.

That said, I have a personal perspective on some of this that I'd like to share
(speaking as me personally)...

The BricksWest(sm) name is a service mark which is held by BrickMedia(tm). No
other organization can just appropriate the name and use it, without getting
permission from BrickMedia. Also, there is a reputation that goes with the name
and a set of expectations that would be set, and potentially, an expectation of
assumption of liability for past events if there were unsettled debts.

Similarly, the BrickFest(sm) name is also a service mark. It is held by
BrickEvents(tm) LLC. Again, no other organization can just appropriate the name
and use it, without getting permission from BrickEvents. Again, there is a
reputation that goes with the name and a set of expectations that would be set.

David L. said it pretty well, I think...  Putting on a show and trying to launch
a magazine as well, at nearly the same time, is something that I expect is
extremely stressful. I think a lot of credit needs to go to Matt Gerber and the
rest of the BM organization for having been able to pull off BW, not just once,
but twice. But, BrickMedia has been pretty incommunicado of late. It would
really be a shame not to have a show on the west coast in this time frame. I
don't see any signs of BM acting. Maybe it's appropriate that someone else carry
the torch. That's just my opinion.

The fact that the BrickFest service mark is being used, again, just in my
opinion, carries an implication... that being that BrickEvents is placing a lot
of trust in the organizers of this event not to sully the brand, not to sully
the mark, not to squander the good will of the community that's been built up by
the delivery of 4 exceptional events.

As to why Portland, the slides touched on part of that which I did not convey in
my snippet... It's a space (1) issue.

Thanks to the hard efforts of Jeremy Rear who built an awesome model of the OCC,
and of PNLTC to build up good will with the OCC, the OCC is *donating* the
space, in exchange for the right to display the OCC model onsite for a year.
6000 square feet of high quality space in a brand new facility is nothing to
shrug off.

As to what this has to do with having or not having NWBrickCon, I'd wait till
NWBrickCon organizers had a chance to speak about future plans before I drew
conclusions, but that's just me.

I'm excited about this announcement. I'm hoping to be involved in some small
way. But I'm planning to be patient to see how more of this unfolds before I
draw any conclusions. I know Steve pretty well at this point as well as many of
the other people involved and I am 100% certain there is no intent to slight
anyone or overlook any opportunity to take advantage of people who are willing
to make positive contributions.

Hope that helps.

1 - "space!!!" says the crowd... it's been a running gag all BF, whenever anyone
accidentally uses the word space in a sentence all the spacers bellow "space!!!"
at the top of their lungs.
