My 2 cents here...

I thought one of the big reasons for having Brickswest in So Cal was because of
Legoland? I mean, I guess as long as you're hanging out with your buddies and
sharing your MOC's, it really doesn't matter too much where you decide to get
together. But for a major event on the west coast, it only seems fitting to have
it at Legoland. Afterall...it's Legoland USA!

It's partly that, Dan. Do you remember how great it was to have the public
viewing at 2003 where all the younger builders and their parents flocked around
you to ask 'How do you do that?'

That's what this is about. Legoland is just a means to an end. By far, it's THE
place to get Lego lovers together to join in their love of the brick. Some folks
were there just to gawk at the cool stuff, but many of them were actually moved
by what they saw. I just don't see how we could replicate this environment in
Portland, Oregon. It seems quite silly to even try.

Let me put it another way: If there was a Legoland on the east coast--let's say
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina--then wouldn't that be a great place to hold
Brickfest? Great weather, pleasant beachfront community, etc. If someone wants
to argue that there's already precedent for having Brickfest elsewhere and why
"move" it to South Carolina, well we can make the same case of having Brickswest
at Legoland twice so far.

Agreed.

So frankly, as far as I'm concerned there is no better region on the west coast
to have Brickswest than So Cal, and no better location than Legoland. That's
just how I feel about it. But if it HAS to be relocated, oh well. That's the way
it goes.

This is where I have to stop you. WHY does it have to be relocated. No one has
answered that yet and until they do, nothing is getting moved anywhere by anyone
unless they've got major fan backing to do it, which they don't.

It's not like I'm not gonna lose sleep over it. I know that right now I
can't really afford the traveling expenses if Brickswest is held in SF or
Seattle, so I'll skip the next one, and maybe the next, until I either have the
money or Brickswest returns to it's ORIGINAL home.

What this is doing is killing my plans to go to NW Brick Con. I had planned to
go, but if I'm just going to be back up north in a couple of months, then really
what's the point? This is why Portland is a BAD idea.

I'd really like to hear more from folks that aren't in Southern Cal, Northern Cal or the NW as to what they are looking for in attending a brick con. So far, it's mainly us westcoasters that have been commenting about why it should or shouldn't be (...) (21 years ago, 10-Aug-03, to lugnet.events.brickswest)
