Dave, If you can still lay your hands on it, get the Technic Space Shuttle. I know it's an older set, but I still see them in shops occasionally (in the Netherlands). Price is around US$ 120. I've found that shooting a laser pointer at a bicycle reflector gives a good enough return (to a light sensor right next to the laser source) to be detected. The black train windows came from a 4559 which has 4. Also, you might think of getting 2 5542's if you want to make one in all black. Most of the yellow pieces also occur in black in that set, so 2 should allow you to substitute most of the yellow (...) (27 years ago, 14-Nov-99, to lugnet.build)
