I don't mean to be so negative.  I really like most of the sets.  It's just
that they seem to be dropping the ball on some of the most anticipated sets.
I hope they prove me wrong.

I dunno...most of *my* most anticipated sets came out in the first batch, and
I don't think they dropped the ball there.  I thought the X-wing was very good,
and the Snowspeeder was nothing short of excellent.

I'm in total agreement, I love the first batch stuff.  Those sets are what
brought me out of my "dark ages".  Lego definitely did a great job with
them.  But as I look at some of the more recent sets such as the AT-ST,
driod escape, Falcon etc. I have to say I'm a little disappointed. They're
not awful but IMO they're not as well thought out as the first batch stuff.
I'm still hoping there will be UCS versions of the Falcon and AT-ST so I'll
just be waiting patiently.

A few thoughts on the historic quality of the SW line:

IMHO, the first round of '99 sets were really fantastic.

The May '99 Ep1 sets were darn good (well, the pods were pretty good anyway.  I
guess I'm just an old-school Classics fan.)

The first round of '00 stuff was good in terms of models, but could have been a
tad better. (I for one was happy with the A & B-Wings, but I know that a lot of
people weren't.)

The second round of '00 stuff was quite good, but hedging on a little bit sloppy
(ex: the suspect color scheme of the MTT and everybody's favorite freighter.)

And, of course, UCS rocks.

Now, here we have arguably the most anticipated SW series: the (mostly) Imperial
line-up (Come on!  Who among us really gives a flip about Watto's Junkyard?
Don't we all just really want those slopes and that clear brick?)  I haven't
seen any of the SW sets yet - they may have found their way to where I live, but
I'm purposefully avoiding temptation until I see what Santa brings me - but from
all appearances the Shuttle is a gem, destined to be one of the best - a set for
which we may get all become teary-eyed and sentimental as we enjoy a good ale
sometime in 2014.  The Tie-Fighter?  Unremarkable but for the very remarkable ST
and Tie-pilot.  High marks there.  The AT-ST: some good parts, but a big loser
in terms of set design.  Yes, yes, I mostly just buy sets for the grist mill
also, but a nice model thrown into the mix doesn't hurt; it adds to the overall
satisfaction; the overall quality; the overall flavor of the product.  The
escape pod?  Well, it has C3-PO and those nice walls.  Shame about it's
appearance, though.  The droid carrier?  Sigh.  Yeah, I want to build an army of
probe droids as well.  Really.  Not bad, but not worth writing in my diary.

Anyway, I'll try to draw this ramble to a tidy end:

I think that the overall quality of the line has diminished a bit since its
gang-busters debut.  Things just somehow seem to be a little bit slipshod and
slapdash.  Perhaps Lego's success in '99 made them lazy; "Those SW geeks will
buy anything.  Don't knock yourself out on the quality.  They'll never notice."
Anyway, while things have indeed become a little bit lacking, the element
selection of the SW sets is an A+, and the '01 sets are no exception (err...,
Watto's junkyard notwithstanding.)
