Toys used to be so much better —Steve Lane
I feel sorry for todays kids, not only have lego sets become less interesting and more childish, toys in general arn't as good. Where are the classics available during my childhood. Decent transformers that turn into cars, not the stupid bugs that (...) (23 years ago, 7-Apr-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: Toys used to be so much better —Mark Sandlin

Look here: (URL) plans to release these transformers in the USA this fall, accompanied by a cartoon. Here's a news link: (URL) is also a (...)           Re: Toys used to be so much better —Steve Lane
(...) I can't believe you said that! My jaw has just dropped onto the floor! Are you MAD! Their robots that turn into things! What aspect of Tranformers isn't totally brilliant? Steve (23 years ago, 7-Apr-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: Toys used to be so much better —Aaron West
(...) Transformations *are* cool, big freakin' robots *are* cool, but Hasbro's Transformers *do* suck. So did the cartoon. Anybody know how Spike could sit inside Bumblebee? Or how Soundwave could shoot with Megatron? And just where did Optimus (...) (23 years ago, 7-Apr-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: Toys used to be so much better —Steve Lane
(...) Because he turned into a VW Beetle that's how Duhh! (...) Dunno. (...) I assume he left it behind like the toy does. I never actually got to see the cartoon. Steve (23 years ago, 7-Apr-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: Toys used to be so much better —Robert Bevens
(...) Transformers the cartoon was pretty cool, considering it actually had a plot, which most cartoons in this day and age seem to lack (except for like Batman and Gargoyles). All in all though when it comes to mechs nothing beats Voltron! : ) (...) (23 years ago, 7-Apr-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: Toys used to be so much better —Aaron West
(...) Original Voltron (Lions was cool, till they computer animated it), but the vehicle one was odd. I had the Lion toy (another import) and my friend had the vehicle one and it was hard for us to play with as it had three modes: 1) all fifteen (...)             Re: Toys used to be so much better —Aaron West
(...) You not watch cartoon, that why you not understand... 1) Spike was human, average size. Bumblebee, the robot, was average human size. When he transforms, suddenly he's bigger than a human. Whatever happened to physics?! Conservation of (...) (23 years ago, 8-Apr-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: Toys used to be so much better —Mark Sandlin
(...) I don't think that the lower quality of later Transformers causes the earlier ones to suck. I'll agree that the stuff released toward the end of the 1st Generation sucked, however. ~1st Lieutenant, Fleebnork Division Muffin Head (23 years ago, 8-Apr-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: Toys used to be so much better —Jason J. Railton
(...) They recently did an 'I love 198x' thing on telly, showing transformers amongst the brat-pack movie clips. They slated Soundwave, asking how this giant robot turned into a little tape player - completely missing the point that the toy was just (...)            Re: Toys used to be so much better —Mark Sandlin
(...) Not when you look at them from a play value/cost standpoint. You could get an Autobot car for about $8.00 back in the day. conversely, Jetfire (VF-1 fighter) cost about $40. The Alpha I had was around $25-30 and the SDF-1 was a similar price. (...) (23 years ago, 8-Apr-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: Toys used to be so much better —Mark Sandlin
(...) Well, that Super Fire Convoy sure looks a lot more complex and poseable than my Optimus Prime ever was. Why do you say that they suck? ~1st Lieutenant, Fleebnork Division Muffin Head (23 years ago, 8-Apr-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: Toys used to be so much better —Aaron West
(...) Well, I dunno, I guess I was getting too much into the spirit of "inciting to riot" since the post was here in .off-topic.debate.          Re: Toys used to be so much better —Steve Lane
If we had Oscars for best posting and best links in a posting I think Mark Sandlin would clean up. I'm a huge Macross fan and by amazing coincidence I started to build a Valkyrie just today. I had to stop as I've run out of bricks due to having to (...) (23 years ago, 7-Apr-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: Toys used to be so much better —Maggie Cambron
(...) It's true. The Barbie I played with as a child had clothes with real buttons and zippers rather than cheap strips of Velcro. My Creepy Crawler maker had molds made of real metal. My Schwinn bicycle with the balloon tires later became trendy as (...) (23 years ago, 8-Apr-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: Toys used to be so much better —Frank Filz
(...) I'm curious if anyone knows of any real analysis of the price of toys. My gut feel is that the quality toys have possibly actually fallen in real cost (LEGO certainly appears to have done so, looking at the Lugnet Set Guide, the 10 cents a (...)          Re: Toys used to be so much better —Katie Dokken
(...) They used too. I used to be a huge Playmobil collector. I have 100's of sets. All in original boxes too. But I've noticed a steady decline in quality the last 2-3 years, also the company itself has really become hard to deal with as well. (...) (23 years ago, 9-Apr-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: Toys used to be so much better —Maggie Cambron

Re: Toys used to be so much better —Christopher Snead
(...) It's funny - although I completely agree with you, my grandfather used to say the same things about my toys. Did you ever have the all die-cast metal Mazinger figures? Those things were beautiful! I also loved my die-cast metal Star Wars toys. (...) (23 years ago, 9-Apr-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: Toys used to be so much better —Mark Sandlin
(...) Die-cast metal is expensive to produce and ship. However, the Macross Plus figures I posted the link to have some die cast parts. :^) ~1st Lieutenant, Fleebnork Division Muffin Head (23 years ago, 9-Apr-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: Toys used to be so much better —Dave Schuler
(...) This isn't really Mecha-related, but your mention of die-cast puts me in mind of Solido military vehicles. Solido, of course, has for decades offered a wide range of civilian as well as military vehicles, but they used to make 1/43 scale armor (...) (23 years ago, 9-Apr-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: Toys used to be so much better —Steve Bliss
(...) You know, you're completely right. I remember, back in the 1980's, feeling really bad for kids, because they couldn't get any decent-sized action figures, all they had were the superheroed/pro-wrestlerized, tiny GI JOE figures, instead of the (...) (23 years ago, 9-Apr-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: Toys used to be so much better —Mark Sandlin
(...) What? Superheroed? Huh? Maybe you're thinking of the ones that were released in the late 80's. The earlier Joes were pretty good, but I'll admit the figures got pretty silly later on. (...) The 3 3/4" Figures were very nearly as articulated as (...) (23 years ago, 9-Apr-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: Toys used to be so much better —Frank Filz

Re: Toys used to be so much better —Dave Schuler
(...) There's a newish line of WWII figures in 1/18 scale--not GIJoe, but even cooler, in my view. They're not as highly articulated as GIJoe, but they're more realistic. They also have a few vehicles, including a tank and a Mustang, both in 1/18 (...) (23 years ago, 9-Apr-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

Re: Toys used to be so much better —Christopher Snead
(...) Actually, although it isn't off-topic, I think that Lego Technic figures do an excellent job at articulation. One thing I never liked about G.I. Joe figures (the small ones, anyway) was that although they were posable, there feet didn't move, (...) (23 years ago, 10-Apr-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
