I'm
disappointed by the LEGO company's approach to their own product and a
review like that is my way of letting them know what one of their customers
thinks of their work.

But it's not a fair review. It's probably not even fair to call it a review.

It seems the concept of fair has come up more than once in this thread.  I
won't spend a lot of time on this, but let me give you my stance on fair.

The company themselves aren't playing fair.

Why?

Simple.

They want us to believe that LEGO still has all of the qualities it used to
and that kids can still build with it the way they used to.  This just
doesn't work for me.  I look at my copy of 'The Ultimate LEGO Book' (coming
up for review soon on the site) and I am nearly brought to tears.

The company goes to great lengths to talk about creativity, construction,
building, sculpting and so forth. They show page after page of models which
most readers simply have no hope of building.  The company, for whatever
reason, refuses to open up basic building bricks to be available at a
reasonable price.  If you ask me, that's unfair.

I'm all for some of the new sets (i.e. Bionicle etc.) if they will help keep
the company afloat financially.  But why they have thrown out most of their
core product principles is quite beyond my capacity to reason.

It seems from the company's perspective that just about anything can be
called a LEGO set these days.  So in my mind, calling my write-ups 'reviews'
is no different than a Jack Stone set bearing the LEGO logo.  It may not
acurately reflect what's inside, but at least it gets your attention.

No, I don't think you were playing fair: Obviously the rules of LUGNET don't
apply, but I thought you might at least have the courtesy to your readers to
be honest.

I'm being brutally honest.  I'm giving out my opinion.  I think it's clear
from the reviews that they aren't all going to be nicey nice.  But as
mentioned, I thought I was doing folks a favor by taking this stuff away
from LUGNET and not trying to spoil the fun that some people have here.

I make no bones about how frustrated and concerned I am for the company, but
I did have the initiative to take that frustration away from what has become
the central web portal for many LEGO fans.

Regards,
Allan B.
