That's UKP 45K *in 1981* - that was a decent chunk of change.  Lego could have
paid them off because they actually admitted guilt, or because they figured it was
cheaper than continuing the litigation.

It definitely puts a new light on the whole Tyco stink, though - I wish Tyco were
still around, they made some amazing parts, and in colors that Lego still doesn't
think are important enough (come ON Lego, produce military colors!!!  You can see
them as Landscaping Colors if you must!).

Oh and one more thing... I knew about
the giant toddler land in the company HQ, but was the author serious when he
wrote that there were butts that farted at your head level and unwanted
cigarette smoke pipped in the rooms?  That sounds a little off kilter to me.

I don't know, this entire article smells of sour grapes. The writer could just
be repeating some off kilter remark someone else made. What I'd ask is what is
the reputation of Independant News. Are they a respected publication, or are
they a tabloid?

It's also curious they mention the bricks originally being wood. It seems like
in that case they would have developed the tube earlier since the wood brick
presumably would have had holes drilled to match the studs, and not been a
hollow box (a wooden hollow box the size of a 2x4 brick would be pretty
fragile). This again sounds like some serious mushing up of a story.

As far as their paying off a lawsuit, if some claimant was willing to settle
for UKP 45k, it seems like they must not have had a very strong case, but were
occupying just enough of TLC's time to be worth just buying them off.

(...) Yup, yup, yup... To my mind Tyco bricks stick together just as well, if not actually better, than do Lego bricks, and I actually have come to believe that the plastic might actually have been more resiliant than whatever TLC uses. And those (...) (24 years ago, 22-Dec-00, to lugnet.general)
