And as you can see, not more polygons, but actually less.

Hmm.  There's a couple of problems with your examples.

In overdraw2.png, you are having the quad intersect the circle exactly
at two vertices.  If the quad was a bit narrower, you would need to
split the two original triangles, retaining the part that is outside the
quad, and inserting a new triangle for the inside.

I believe that's why I have drawn "overdraw3.png" ! ;)

In overdraw3.png, the polygon which replaces the area of (Quad - Circle)
is a pentagon.  That needs to be split into a triangle and a quad.

Damn, I missed that one, but just need to split the pentagon into a quad and
a triangle.

Once you take these two problems into account, you get more polys, not
less.

As I said, the disc as only 8 slices to simplify, with the regular 16 you would
save polys, and I also said:
" As a rule of tumb, less points => less faces."

But Not always, expecially, if you end up with non-convex (complex) poly.

Also you could remove the center (point) of the disk for some extra savings !
But that seems too much.

Not a Rule, just a "guideline", authors are NOT obliged, but they are
encouraged to do it, because it's better.

Too many obscure 'guidelines' will still discourage new parts authors.

I don't know why you call it "obscure", especially if the "guideline FAQ"
explanes the pros and Cons of this guidelines. If well written, I think it would
help, even if only to the way a "builder" creates the parts (there tesselation).

See ya
