Ooh.  That's an interesting one.  One kind of "cheating" that won't
confuse the system is using a color of a part that doesn't really exist

similar to the way a request for a really old, really rare part probably
wouldn't ever be fulfilled.  (Note that there's really no way to know
100.000% for sure whether any given part was never ever released in a
given color -- especially since TLG produces special colored versions of
pieces for the large LEGOLAND scenes.)

AUGH! I'm guilty of both types of cheating!  Maybe you should allow the
person searching for the parts to replace hard to find colors with easier
to find parts?  For example, I built all my Star Wars models in white
(except for the snow speeder), but LDraw'd them in gray so they would
look more realistic.
Not only that, I'm also guilty of using colors that don't exist at all!
(My Emoji theme)

So tell me more about this type of "cheating" -- You are mirroring a
wing element by using some affine transformation on it, without changing

its part number?

Exactly.  I do this with symmetrical submodels to save time.  It doesn't
cause any problem for most pieces, but wing elements are a problem.
Also, if I ever decided to render the text on the studs, it would turn
out backwards or upside-down!  The transformation needed is simple:
instead of
1 c x y z 1 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 1 part.dat
I open up the text editor and enter
1 c x y z -1 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 1 part.dat
I hope that explains it!
