I have checked with our network administrator, and he said
OK to point the "ldraw.org" domain to "hugin.risoe.dk". I am
not sure I can allow the site to eat more than 300 Mb, but I
hope that's enough.

I should think that 300mb would be enough.  I only expect the programs to
take up 50mb at the most.  As you know, sites themselves take up very
little space.

Also, what are your guidelines for the site being there?
Will we be allowed to have a repository of official LEGO
models in ldraw format?

Yes (but I still like the idea of just pointing to
<URL:http://www.lugnet.com/news/ldraw.cgi?lugnet.cad.dat:>).

That URL didn't load for me.  I don't mind storing the files there, but I
would like to have pages that refer to the *files* there in our own look
and feel.  That way users don't have to go to a lugnet page with completely
different navigation to grab a model.

Last night and today I sketched up how I wanted the site to look.  I like
the light font that is displayed at the lego.com's about us section.  Also,
their format looks good.  I would like it to appear similar but different
in several ways.  First, we will not have the yellow navigation panel on
the right.  Second, their colors on some of the items will be changed.
Third, I would like to see Verdana used as the typeface given that 90% of
surfers out there should have it.

I think I belong to the remaining 10% (I usually do :-).

:)  Um, I'll send you an email with Verdana attached :P  Its a Microsoft
freeware typeface.  If I don't figure out how to embed it, we can always
make it available for download from the server.

As far as design goes, I don't want this to get overly legalistic on
compatibility with older browsers.

No. Just make sure all pages are valid HTML[1] and - if you
want to be polite to your host - remember that his version
of lynx is quite new.

Ok.  And I probably should know this, but what is lynx?

Also, what should be done about multilanguage support?  Do some of our
multilingual listers want to translate the English versions?

Probably.

Good.  What languages should we give support to?  Of course we should do
Danish, since Lego comes from Denmark :)  My thoughts would be French,
Spanish, and German at the least.  Japanese?

How will we keep track of the different sections of the site?

Apache supports that you just request an URL like
<URL:http://hugin.risoe.dk/> and then get different files
depending on your language preferences and what's available.
This system doesn't work with different files, but with
different extensions:

What are the advantages of this system over having each language with their
own subdirectory?  One of the things I would like to avoid is the specific
page index.en.html since the default language for the site would be
English.  I don't feel its necessary to tack on the .en because of that.  I
don't have a problem with the other languages.  Please explain this system
more so that I can understand.  I am not completely against this idea, but
would like the English pages to come out with a cleaner URL that just says
.html.

My thoughts are to have
it default to English and give options somewhere near the top for different
languages.  Instead of keeping the pages in the same directory, have it
change the root directory to something like:

/deutsch/
/espanol/
/français/
/dansk/
/english/

Not a bad idea, except that it means that the translators
have to translate every page before the translation can be

used.

Could you please explain the meaning of that further?

[...]

Another quick thought I don't care either way on:  Should we provide
documents to download in Adobe Acrobat Reader .pdf format?  Acrobat is a
very nice compression for documents and provides near perfect results of
pages to either be viewed on the computer or printed out.  Acrobat Reader
is freeware, but the program that writes the format costs USD 30.  Again,
its just one of those random thoughts thrown in the air most likely to be
shot down :)

We could also use plain gzipped Postscript. The compression
is equivalent to the one Acrobat performs and the tools are
free.

I don't think that my (Win98) PC provides a reader for gzipped postscript.
Could we do both formats?  I assume the gzipped postscript is leaning more
toward use on Unix workstations, right?  Acrobat seems to be the standard
for Windows.  The IRS uses it for their tax forms they make available over
the internet :)

Play well,

(this site will be a lot of fun to make) :)

Keep Building!!
