Good idea.  Whoever it is (I think it was Larry) who volunteered to collect
the funds for the domain should post with instructions on how he wants the
collection to take place.  I believe when you register a domain you need to
have a primary and secondary name server to assign it to - this means we
need to get the space cleared.  Jacob, are you going to donate
hugin.risoe.dk webspace for the site?  Also, what are your guidelines for
the site being there?  Will we be allowed to have a repository of official
Lego models in ldraw format?

Last night and today I sketched up how I wanted the site to look.  I like
the light font that is displayed at the lego.com's about us section.  Also,
their format looks good.  I would like it to appear similar but different
in several ways.  First, we will not have the yellow navigation panel on
the right.  Second, their colors on some of the items will be changed.
Third, I would like to see Verdana used as the typeface given that 90% of
surfers out there should have it.

As far as design goes, I don't want this to get overly legalistic on
compatibility with older browsers.  I feel that the web is developed enough
to use nested tables and plenty of (small) gif images to give it a crisp,
clean look.  We can keep the document weight of each page below 30k - and
this should load within 10 seconds on most connections because download
rates on my 56k that still connects at 31k get up to 4.1k/s.

Also, what should be done about multilanguage support?  Do some of our
multilingual listers want to translate the English versions?  How will we
keep track of the different sections of the site?  My thoughts are to have
it default to English and give options somewhere near the top for different
languages.  Instead of keeping the pages in the same directory, have it
change the root directory to something like:

/deutsch/
/espanol/
/francais/
/dansk/

..and have the subdirectory structure for each language be under the
respective main lanugage directory.  Of course the subdirs should be named
in that language, not English.

We also need to decide if we're going to have direct download information
pages for the official and unofficial add-ons and utilities that have been
created to go with ldraw.  I am STRONGLY in favor of this idea.  What I am
thinking of is pages similar to download.com when you have selected a
specific piece of software to download.  It gives system requirements,
copyright and licencing information, and a short description of what the
program is.  We can leave the help files and readme files up to the author,
who would most likely put that on their site.  The links to such files
would most likely start a new window when clicked so the surfer can read
them in a seperate window as well as not potentially lose the spot on the
organization site they were at.

To do this, we will need to gather a list of program locations (and
probably move those that are on geocities with that annoying .bin
extension) and then have the program authors write up the text for the
download pages and provide url's for their program information pages online.

Another quick thought I don't care either way on:  Should we provide
documents to download in Adobe Acrobat Reader .pdf format?  Acrobat is a
very nice compression for documents and provides near perfect results of
pages to either be viewed on the computer or printed out.  Acrobat Reader
is freeware, but the program that writes the format costs USD 30.  Again,
its just one of those random thoughts thrown in the air most likely to be
shot down :)

Aside from a research paper to write this weekend, I have no problem
getting started on this project.  Again, I will need some volunteers on the
writing of the site's many pages of information.  Please, if you desire to
help out with this needed project, drop me a line at tcourtney@avenew.com.

Thanks!

Keep Building!!
