Yeah, there really isn't one perfect color to use in general.
Peeron has (by preference) use the Clear as the 'default' color for part images
for awhile now. The default color is shown on the part-information pages, and
anywhere that the part-color doesn't have an LDraw-equivalent. Before switching
to Clear some months ago, Gray was as the default color.
What's changing now is the background of the images. Before, they were
hard-colored as White. Now they're being marked as transparent. So the
background of whatever web-page the image is shown in will come through; there
won't be a white box around the part.
If you look at some of the inventory listings (with "Show Pictures"), you should
be able to find a mix of parts with solid- and transparent-backgrounds. At
least until all the images are regenerated.

| (...) I'm curious why the switch was made from Grey to Clear. As noted by Ross, some of the parts look funky in a transparent color as opposed to a solid color. -Orion (20 years ago, 15-Oct-04, to lugnet.cad)
