I have only heard of a few serious problems that could not be resolved with this issue. But, on the other hand, there have been a few (like mine) that can't recover from this steering problem. I think as long as nothing is on, it will be fine. You may have a problem with corrupted firmware though - will there be a computer there to upload new firmware/programs if needed? But the problem with that argument is that, in the case mentioned, the notecard had been copyrighted. If somebody went and stole the design, he could get into trouble for copyright infrigment. I just noticed that L3P and LDRAW Viewer do not play well together. Running an LDRAW Viewer file through L3P produces a ".pov" file that contains only 1 black brick.
