We should make the distinction between real time systems and embedded
systems. Java is fine for embedded systems with no real time requirements.

In my line of business I see some Java being used in real time systems.
But never for real time purposes, only for low priority (as regards to
real time properties) operation and maintenance.

FYI I have been involved in two (big) projects using java for controlling
industrial production one is used to control high speed sorting systems the
other for controlling packing of newspapers comming directly from the • rotation
press. And yes it works. Offcourse you cannot give any guarantess.

When making a GSM call setup the latency for the call going into a base
station/base station controller and out into the next in the chain is 20ms.
If you fail you break the GSM specification. How are you going to guarantee
that with Java?

Don't you want the telephone network to function reliably?

Why did you pick Java for this problem? Just because of the hype?

No, java was picked because the company did not wan't to use C++ as it had some
bad experience with projects taking way too long to complete. It had used
Visual basic (yieek) before but it tended to be slow and the code was not
manageable. The first project (the newspaper packaging system) used JDK 1.02 as
it was started as early as may 1996, actually it was only the control code
which was written in java the GUI was written in VB. I offcourse realize that
hard real time systems need something else. But in practice the system kept
track of every paper running through the packing system, never missing a single
one and GC kicked in at the most inapropriate times, and we were not
even running with a JIT compiler, as at that time they made the whole system
unstable. (the max. packing speed was 80000 papers/hour)
