Because you wont be satisfied?
John, you and I do good for the same reasons. Our genes tell us to. They tell
us to because by telling us, they enabled us to build a society that protects us
against the predators. Mutual beneficence is something were hard-wired for and
it largely dictates what we think good and bad mean.
I look at that and marvel at the sophistication that four billion years of
competition will render. You look at it and make up stories to account for it
(well, technically, you adopt the fabrications of others). The only difference
in our doing good is a thin veneer at the top.
