California Recall: The Coup Inside a Circus

edit: I can’t quite dismiss this story as complete madness. There’s so much going on right now in terms of information consolidation that it’s hard to see the purposes of democracy winning out against the “Bush-ite, Murdoch, Clearwater, Right-Wing” media juggernaut. After all, a bloody coup is unnecessary when the people will just rollover for you, watching the right-wing take over on television! And speaking of rollover...

That’s pretty funny--I was snickering as soon as I hit the “rightwing (sic) forces controlling the Republican Party want TOTAL victory” part. Substitute left wing and Democrat and that statement’s true too. Geez, what a revelation! I’m sure CommonDreams.org would be opposed to a total left-wing domination for the foreseeable future? (And I largely enjoy mocking conspiracy theories too.)

Realistically, the recall is kind of a dumb idea for Republicans. They stand to inherit a big budget mess and when it’s not cleaned up right away the mantra will be that Republican fiscal policy doesn’t work. They also go from a 2006 election where a poor Democrat candidate who was elected largely on the strength of his own incumbency (coupled with poor Republican campaigning in ‘02) won’t be able to run again. A strong Republican campaign would have a reasonable chance of winning.

Putting politics before people, it would be in the Republicans’ best interest for California to utterly collapse. Then it’s easy to say, “Liberalism doesn’t work. Just look at California!”

OTOH, regardless of what machinery set in motion, recall is a legally-approved action in the CA constitution. The recall also will succeed or fail based on exercise of democracy, not judicial fiat or legislative shenanigans. Plus if any state deserves strange political goings-on, it’s probably California too.

(...) Yes, everybody wants total domination for their particular agenda, but the article was accurate on that account: the right-wing Republicans are doing whatever it takes to actually achieve theirs. Personally, I think their overreaching mania (...) (21 years ago, 14-Aug-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate, FTX)
