I dont know about Dave!, but I favor any of the above over our current
system of taxation. FWIW, the question of how the tax is levied leaves to
the side two main issues: how much to tax and how to handle corporate taxes.
I unequivocally favor a flat rate or a sales tax at both federal and state
taxes for taxes assessed to natural persons.

Wow--I kinda had the feeling from reading this NG for a while that you & I might
never agree on anything! :)
I lean towards a national sales tax for several reasons:
1) Given 3 common economic behaviors, production (including reinvestment),
consumption, and savings, the one that should be penalized is consumption, IMO.
2) It removes the burden of recordkeeping and filing from individuals.
3) It gets rid of the horribly complex tax code that requires a Ph.D. to
understand, and even then its easy to make mistakes that are costly or even
criminal because it winds up being interpreted by a bureaucrat.
4) The mantra that I often hear from the left is that you cant legislate
morality. Well, a large portion of the tax code exists to legislate behavior!
Thats even worse IMO because it allows for government interference in our
day-to-day lives. (My base political philosophy is that by and large most
people want to be left the heck alone, BTW.)
Id even be convinced without a lot of trouble that the needy should receive
reduced-tax status, either in the form of an identification shown when
purchasing food, clothing, etc. or a regular (more than once a year, at least
once a quarter if not month) tax rebate check.
I waffle on the subject of corporate taxes. Sometimes I think it would be best
if corporations paid all taxes, other times I think they should pay none because
it hides the cost of government in the price of items we buy.
