Man if I don’t log on for just one day some of these posts just get buried by
others.

Oh, I actively dislike Shrub.  I hope that is very clear, no dodging necessary.
I think he is the worst president we have had in my lifetime (which is to say
the last 40 years or so).

I just had to address this statement. It actually reminded me of the way I felt
about Clinton during his presidency. In 1992 when he was first elected I thought
the world had gone crazy. How in the world could they elect a guy who was so
obviously draft dodger, adulterer, and liar? I couldn’t possibly imagine any
thinking rational person voting for him. I rationalized that they were voting
against George H. W. “Read my lips” Bush, or that Perot stole away too many
votes. Then during impeachment the same reaction, “has the entire country gone
insane? Am I the only one who can see through the spin?” I began to feel some of
the same level of anger and resentment toward Clinton, but now that his
presidency is over I can evaluate it more objectively and admit I may have
exaggerated that point.

However, let me go over a few men who have held the office over the 40 year span
you have mentioned.

I assume you are basing you claim on GWB’s Iraq policy, if so can you honestly
say that his actions in Iraq are any worse than his fathers, or
Kennedy/Johnson’s policy in Vietnam.

Perhaps you refer to GWB’s usurpation of civil liberties with the patriot act, I
have to go back a bit to find Roosevelt’s internment of the Japanese, which I
would say  a bit more severe.

One can hardly mention dishonest presidents without bringing up Nixon and
Clinton.

Finally maybe you refer to economic policies, here I invoke the memory long gas
lines and horrible economic growth that existed under Jimmy Carter’s presidency.

I offer these not as attacks on these past men, but as a bit of perspective for
your claims. Do I think GWB is the greatest among his predecessors? Absolutely
not, but I can see no justification for naming him the worst in nearly a half
century. If I were voting for worst in that time frame I would have to say
Carter, worst all time James Buchanan.

In my not so humble opinion, agreeing with most of the foreign policy and
anti-terrorist mumbo jumbo forwarded by the present administration makes one
rather pointedly un-american -- I am dismayed that you can't see that from your
political perspective

I make a promise, no matter how much you call me un-American I will never pose
naked for entertainment weekly, like the Dixie Chicks, not that I would be
offered the gig :). Do I fear that the patriot act may infringe on my rights as
a citizen? Yes, but that is an allowance that I make for safety, much like long
airport lines. I too am suspicious of the governments increased surveillance
abilities, and think they walk a fine line, that is easily crossed. I also
really hope that WMD’s are found, not just evidence of them, but actual barrels
of stuff that the UN said he had. Without those it makes it more difficult to
defend the intelligence cited by the coalition as justification for this war. If
it is revealed that GWB was lying, I will be the first to sign a recall petition
(I did just sign one for California's lousy govenor), but I have not yet been
convinced, in spite of the leftist spin I have heard.

(...) Shrub has been AWOL and everything about his "military" career was protected and sanctified by Daddy Shrub himself -- give it a rest. It's all well covered up and with the appropriate gloss of "spin", just like his drug and alcohol record. So, (...) (21 years ago, 4-Jun-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate, FTX)

(...) Yes, but Clinton remembered one thing, "It's the economy, stupid." People knew that Nixon was a mean man, not an honest man. But they felt he could run the country. Clinton could run the country: not one of your complaints about him precludes (...) (21 years ago, 4-Jun-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate, FTX)

(...) The jury's still out, isn't it? I mean, we're still in the midst of the detentions and profiling, so we can hardly judge Dubya's policies as if they've run their full course. In addition, Dubya's internment of Arabs is worsened because he (...) (21 years ago, 4-Jun-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
