That's all well and good, but it must be stressed once again that Heicklen
is a Libertarian only in name, and his shenanigans are more directed toward
his own quest for social martyrdom and sensationalism than about furthering
or even disseminating the Libertarian Party's goals or beliefs. It must by
now be plainly apparent to anyone here (who has an opinion one way or the
other) that I am hardly a Libertarian, but even I can see that Heicklen
isn't a representative Libertarian, so complaints about him are irrelevant
to complaints about the Libertarian Party.
Having spent a decade in State College, I can tell you with some
experience that Heicklen is a well-off retiree who doesn't really care if
he's cited for disorderly conduct (such as when he threw a tantrum in a
local Wal-Mart) and who seems to get his jollies by luring idealistic and
well-meaning (but misguided) students into his campaign. If we're going to
criticize the LP in terms of Heicklen, we might just as readily criticize
the LP in terms of Scott Arthur or Dave Schuler.
Having said that, it might be prudent for the LP to state clearly that
Heicklen's a wacko who doesn't represent their views...
Dave!
