I personnaly don't care what the LP thinks...

Then why are you raving about it?

Chris

I'm certainly not the one raving - LAR is.

It's Lar, not LAR. Please keep it straight, if you would, ED. Thanks.

I simply stated that the LP issuing
a statement is pandering for self promotoion.

And when I explained why it isn't, you foamed. I foamed back. Sorry.

Do only the two big parties even *get* to have an opinion? Blech.

Thank you LFB for the link to HB which I quote in part:

- start -

"Using this event as a means to bolster the Libertarian party is despicable
and it is disgusting."

It appears that standing up for what one believes isn't a way to bolster the
popularity of the Libertarian Party. But that's what Libertarians often do –
especially when no one else will.

- end -

I have my differences with HB but he's right about this. The LP making their
position known isn't going to win them a lot of new fans. Oh well. Would you
prefer a party that polls in order to decide what position to hold, or a
Party of Principle? What's the point of saying what everyone already thinks?
So you are wrong to say that the LP shouldn't say what it thinks, because
it's important to debate this.

But you go further. You say that the LP doesn't have the influence of a sack
of fries.

Really? "the era of big government is over"... remember? Who's the chair of
the Fed again? Who's the chair of the FCC again?  Who's the secretary of the
Interior again? They, and lots of others, have been strongly influenced by
objectivist and libertarian ideas. We're debating whether to privatize
social security, which was the "third rail" of politics, and considered
undebatable. We're debating whether to further deregulate many industries.
We're debating how much to cut capital gains taxes, and the list goes on and
on and on.

You are wrong. Libertarian ideas have had a vast influence in this country
of late and while the LP isn't the only reason why (there is the Cato
Institute, the Reason Foundation, and lots of other organizations) to say it
had no part in making that happen is false, wishful thinking on the part of
detractors.

Parties do not need to win elections to exert influence. Ask the 1920s
Socialists.

The world is becoming more libertarian and I for one don't understand why
you have such a big beef with it, so big that you lash out blindly like
this. Many of your ideas and goals are similar. Only the means differ.

(...) Lar, in this crises, good or bad, the "two big parties" in power hold the only opinions that will be acted upon. While many people and groups may hold opinions, the decisions about to be made will be made by those in power. A very simple (...) (23 years ago, 15-Sep-01, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
