Note the "as it were" here. This is a figure of speech, I don't believe
MICHLUG or MICHLTC actually *has* a banner.

There is no "banner". It was figurative. However, if there were, it would
not be Chris's decision to make, it is the club as a whole that has to decide.

Your apology to me, and I suspect to James as well, is not necessary.
It suggests that you haven't yet grasped what the issue is. It is not one of
affront. It is one of appropriateness. I am not personally offended by
religion in general or by this request in particular. I just do not think it
is appropriate for the club AS A CLUB to do this. No amount of apologising
on your part will suffice, what is needed is your understanding, not your
contrition.
The decision of whether the club participates AS A CLUB ultimately is a
decision for the club as a whole to make. Not for Chris alone to make, not
for me alone to make, not for you alone, but the club. Since we have a very
informal structure, we tend to take decisions by consensus. My read of the
comments of other members is that consensus has been reached, the club as a
whole should not.
The decision of whether individuals participate is an individual decisions.
Many individuals have decided to do so. Some have not. That's great.
Hopefully this will put the matter to rest unless you still do not see the
distinctions here.
