I have to agree that this is probably the worst castle ever (even worse then
6098), but as James said, new weapons, alot of new helmets/visors, new colors
for the horse head cover, a great executer mini-fig and alot of parts to use
for our castles so who cares that its not TLC best models ever.

Glorious bad castles!
Im not pleased with the mixture of old and new here. Flame me for saying this,
but I think Lego would be advantaged by dumping all old Castle elements in favor
of all new ones that are designed in a shared style. For example, the old and
new helmets. There are new curvy helms (plus not so old jousting helms), and
they clash with the same-old-morion-nose-guard thingies designed in an era when
all minifigs smiled. To go with the brightly colored bascinets, imagine if
there were an all-new morion-style helm with just a noseguard sticking down, not
a perfect cone either.
And Jack Stone platforms in Castle? Stylistically, they have vertical slots and
round holes. (brown 12x12 base and grey 12x12 base in 8780.) These are new
parts, but the markings dont share anything stylistically with CASTLE. Technic
maybe.. (sorry Technic.) Dump all the pre-built wall elements and redo them Jack
Stone style (horrors), or do like Megabloks and make an all-new Castley wall
building system. Make it bold and curvy, or stony and blocky, you have the
ability to do it Lego, as you did the banana slopes for Star Wars which still
work well as a system!
Now for the trans-neon spear. Is that a wizard, or a fisherman? The swords are
made new, now its time for a spear, or at least a Staff, to get designed. Ditto
old axes - theyre too slim and elemental to go with the new swords (or even the
not-new halberds.)
Megabloks still has the advantage that it looks good together. Lego is playing
catch-up, leveraging old stuff, with not terribly good effect.
Anyway, the blue-accented castle (upper right) is not unattractive. This (8781)
has more angles than I ever recall on a Lego castle and the pyramid shape is
weirdly satisfying. But the one on the left (8780) looks like Lego cliches. I
was thinking these were as bad as 6097 - 6098 is better proportioned and
colored, if less defensible.
8780 - why oh why do castles need a platform on 4 pillars for a keep? (To allow
fingers to get in, naturally.) Ack.
Ive not been too crazy about buying Castle sets but when these come around I
do want to see inside...
8780 - Starter Castle.
8781 - Cool.
8779 - Fresh update of a corny concept out of Thundarr the Barbarian and
He-Man. 8778 - this may be the cleanest, most likable out of the lot. (Lose
the flames, Lego, and make a real torch, no not a classic space gun with a cone
either.) Looks like Adventurers designed this one for Castle! 8777 - nice
impulse set.

| (...) Actually, the Armada Pirates helmet is the morion. What you refer to as a morion is more of a spangen-constructed Norman/Viking style. It's hard to tell with blurry pictures, but the new open faced helmet looks like a barbutte and is another (...) (21 years ago, 17-Dec-03, to lugnet.castle, FTX)
