Yes, it is good to see some non-HP Castle sets in the works. It’s annoying to
have to wait till Summer to see them but eh..it’s not so far off. :)

I have to agree that this is probably the worst castle ever (even worse then
6098), but as James said, new weapons, alot of new helmets/visors, new colors
for the horse head cover, a great executer mini-fig and alot of parts to use
for our castle’s so who cares that it’s not TLC best models ever. Have you
notice how the small minifigs looks very like the Knights Kingdom Bionicles
stuff?

C’mon now... I think that’s a little harsh. ;) It’s not the “worst” castle.. but
it’s no Black Monarch’s either. Actually, if given the choice between this
castle and 6098, I think I’d go with this one because of all the gray. I agree
it isn’t the best set they have released. And it’ll be “new” gray I’d think
but.. eh... Let’s not get back into a debate on the color change. ;)
As for the pieces in the set(s)
There a ton of gray slopes and over all this looks like a ‘bigger’ castle at
least in bulk/body. I wonder what the piece count is. I’d imaging it’s
comparable to 6098, etc.
Those diamond shaped windows look to me like they could be 2x2 tall slopes with
1x2 inverse 45degree slopes atop them. That would be very nice but even if it is
one single piece, it’s a great shape and size for a new window style.
I, too, look forward to having access to armor again, and new weapon styles,
helms and barding and all of them in more colors than we’ve had previously. It
even looks like there will be armor in (dare I say it?) black.
There are many interesting colors or pieces - In 8780 -- there’s a 2x2x3 dkGray
brick with what looks like a small arched window in each side and some sort of
beam that appears to connect into it.. That could be very interesting. As are
the 3x4x6 panel walls with the arched barred window inserts. A far better/more
useful design than the original style IMO.
The upshot to me is that TLG does appear to be interested in Castle still. They
are giving us a new NON-HP castle for the first time since 1999/2000. What’s
more, there appear to be more bricks than pre-fab pieces in this set than there
have been in Castles since the 90’s... One may not need a ton of gray slopes but
they’re better than some alternatives I could think of... :)

Again the main importent is that Castle’s lives again and this time for
good!!!!

While we can only hope it’s for good, this is a great start at reviving the
theme. I’m looking forward to seeing these sets in the store.
With luck TLG will continue to take our (calm) input - for or against their
approaches - into consideration and use (some of) it to drive(1) future set
creation as well as using the input of kids, such as this new subtheme appears
to have been primarily based on.

(1) The use of the 45 degree end slopes on castle walls are the first thing I
noticed. This is the first time I recall them doing that. That’s something
AFOL’s have done for some years (I can’t remember if Pawel’s Blut’Ader was the
first castle to use it but it’s the one that comes to mind first). I think
that’s a great incorporation.
